Lipid signaling in disease is an important field of investigation and stems from the pioneering work

from our and Irvine’s laboratories at the end of the eighties (Cocco et al., 1987). Inositides are key

cellular second messengers with well established roles in signal transduction pathways. A distinct

nuclear inositide signaling metabolism has been identified, thus defining a new role for nuclear inositides,

which are now considered essential co-factors for several nuclear processes, including DNA

repair, transcription regulation, and RNA dynamics. Imbalances of the major lipid signaling pathways

may contribute to disease progression in several disorders, such as chronic inflammation, cancer,

metabolic, and degenerative syndromes. Inositide signaling cascades are therefore essential components

of the extremely complicated, multistep process that allows one extracellular signal to be

transduced inside the cell, to the nucleus. Moreover, these pathways are complex and redundant, and

many of the signaling molecules, their modifying enzymes and downstream targets are common to

multiple pathways (Cocco et al., 2009; Faenza et al., 2008; Martelli et al.,1992). As a consequence, many

signaling pathways can be deregulated in several pathological conditions, as well as in cancer. That is

why several signaling lipid-generating enzymes have been and are still being targeted pharmacologically,

alone or in combination, to alleviate the symptoms, or even progression of the different diseases

(Cocco et al., 2010; Wymann and Schneiter, 2008).

Elk-1 was regarded as a transcription factor engaged mainly in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation,

and survival. Recent findings show the engagement of Elk-1 in the control of expression of genes encoding

proteins involved in transcript turnover, such as MCPIP1/ZC3H12A and tristetraprolin (TTP/ZFP36). Thus,

Elk-1 plays an important role in the control of gene expression not only through the stimulation of expression

of transcription factors, but also through regulation of transcript half-live. Moreover, Elk-1 is engaged in the

regulation of expression of genes encoding proteins that control proteolytic activity, such as inhibitor of

plasminogen activator-1 (PAI-1) and metalloproteinases-2 and -9 (MMP-2 and MMP-9). This review summarizes

the biological roles of proteins with expression regulated by Elk-1, involved in transcripts turnover or in

cell migration. The broad range of function of these proteins illustrates the complex role of Elk-1 in the

regulation of cancer and inflammation.

This paper presents an adaptive combinational approach for the score level fusion of fingerprint and voice

biometrics, whose performance under adverse noise conditions are investigated systematically. An efficient

preprocessing on the raw vector of scores using normalization and wavelet denoising is proposed,

to improve the performance of the multibiometric system. The class as well as the score separability

measures, under various noise conditions are estimated and combined algebraically, to determine the

best integration weights, for the complementary modalities employed. The z-score normalized impostor

scores are modelled as white Gaussian noise so that the wavelet denoising techniques can be readily

applied. The inter/intra class separability measures from the feature space and the d-prime separability

measures from the match score space are estimated in the training/validation phase. The performance

of the proposed method is compared with the baseline techniques on score level fusion. Experimental

evaluations show that the proposed method improves the recognition accuracy and reduces the false

acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR) over the baseline systems, under various signal-tonoise

ratio (SNR) conditions. The proposed biometric solutions will be extremely useful in applications

where there are less number of available training samples.

Kernel ridge regression is a technique to perform ridge regression with a potentially infinite

number of nonlinear transformations of the independent variables as regressors. This

method is gaining popularity as a data-rich nonlinear forecasting tool, which is applicable

in many different contexts. The influence of the choice of kernel and the setting of tuning

parameters on forecast accuracy is investigated. Several popular kernels are reviewed, including

polynomial kernels, the Gaussian kernel, and the Sinc kernel. The latter two kernels

are interpreted in terms of their smoothing properties, and the tuning parameters associated

to all these kernels are related to smoothness measures of the prediction function

and to the signal-to-noise ratio. Based on these interpretations, guidelines are provided for

selecting the tuning parameters from small grids using cross-validation. A Monte Carlo

study confirms the practical usefulness of these rules of thumb. Finally, the flexible and

smooth functional forms provided by the Gaussian and Sinc kernels make them widely

applicable. Therefore, their use is recommended instead of the popular polynomial kernels

in general settings, where no information on the data-generating process is available.

This study evaluated the influence of deposition parameters for Si-based thin films using magnetron

sputtering for coating zirconia and subsequent adhesion of resin cement. Zirconia ceramic blocks were

randomly divided into 8 groups and specimens were either ground finished and polished or conditioned

using air-abrasion with alumina particles coated with silica. In the remaining groups, the polished specimens

were coated with Si-based film coating with argon/oxygen magnetron discharge at 8:1 or 20:1 flux.

In one group, Si-based film coating was performed on air-abraded surfaces. After application of bonding

agent, resin cement was bonded. Profilometry, goniometry, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy

and Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy analysis were performed on the conditioned zirconia surfaces.

Adhesion of resin cement to zirconia was tested using shear bond test and debonded surfaces were

examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Si-based film coating applied on air-abraded rough zirconia

surfaces increased the adhesion of the resin cement (22.785.2 MPa) compared to those of other

methods (0–14.62 MPa) (). Mixed type of failures were more frequent in Si film coated groups on

either polished or air-abraded groups. Si-based thin films increased wettability compared to the control

group but did not change the roughness, considering the parameters evaluated. Deposition parameters

of Si-based thin film and after application of air-abrasion influenced the initial adhesion of resin cement

to zirconia.

This study investigates the determinants of audit fees for UK universities, involving an analysis

of 451 university-year observations over the period 2007–2010. The study contributes

to a fledgling strand of research examining audit pricing in the public sector. In seeking to

identify an appropriate model to explain audit fees we interview a number of university

auditors and use their insights in conjunction with prior findings from both private and

public sector studies of audit pricing. Our findings show that audit fees in UK universities

are positively influenced by size, the number of subsidiary companies, the amount of

endowments, the level of debtors, being located in England and the use of a London-based

auditor. We also find that more research-intensive universities (using a range of measures)

and universities with greater operating surpluses pay lower audit fees.

Detailed simulation and visualization of crane activities have been recently introduced to help engineers

identify potential problems with critical erection tasks; however, the development of real-time erection

visualizations for different types of cranes and lifting objects is time-consuming, and usually requires a

certain amount of effort in modeling and setting up the environment. This research proposes a configurable

model which is reusable, fast-prototyping, and extendable to support real-time visualization of the

erection process. The developed model of the crane is divided into three modules which can be reconfigured

for different erection tasks. Each module is defined using multiple rigid bodies and the joint constraints

of multibody dynamics. The proposed modeling method can also be easily adapted to existing

physics engines. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method, we observed the processes involved

in a common erection activity and compared this with the visualization results obtained using proposed

method. We also simulated a cooperative cranes scenario taken from an actual construction project to

demonstrate its usability. We found that the proposed modeling method was easily able to visualize various

erection activities with different cranes and configurations
