Lightly loaded structures constructed on expansive soils may develop structural damage as a result of

changes in the soil’s moisture content. This study investigated an analytical model of soil–structure interaction

to assess the settlement of dwellings built on swelling soils when droughts occur. The building

behavior was investigated with the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, and the ground behavior was investigated

with a Winkler-derived model based on the state surface approach. The analytical model results

were compared to those of a finite element analysis using the Barcelona Expansive Model (BExM) performed

with Code_Bright.

The analytical model was then used to assess the settlement transmission ratio for a typology of clayey

soils and different parameters of building. The results indicated that the final deflection of the building

increased with the building length and soil suction. The building deflection due to the suction variations

was inversely proportional to the load, the rigidity of the building and the embedding depth of the foundation.

Increasing these parameters made the building less vulnerable to shrinkage and swelling action

Perspectives on reproduction and developmental disabilities are

gradually changing in Sweden. Through this change parents with

developmental disabilities are gradually being included within an

emergent discourse of “good enough parenting” on certain conditions.

The present article explores discourses of reproduction and

parenting among adults with developmental disabilities in two

Swedish contexts: in a Swedish magazine, “Empowerment”, produced

by and aimed at adults with autism, and interviews with

people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden. Common to the

materials from both studies are a normative reprosexual discourse

of parenting and an underlying assumption that parenthood relates

to adulthood in the sense that it requires maturity. The stories in the

magazine “Empowerment” can be seen as expressing an emergent

counter-hegemonic conditional discourse of “good enough parenting”

which regards some people with autism as “good enough”

parents. In general terms, the stories about parenting in the interview

study depict parenting as related to age awareness and, unlike

what is found in the material from “Empowerment”, there is no discussion

of or reflection on whether or how impairment affects one’s

opportunity/ability to become a parent

The wide applicability of Gibbs sampling has increased the use of more complex and multi-level

hierarchical models. To use these models entails dealing with hyperparameters in the deeper levels of a

hierarchy. There are three typical methods for dealing with these hyperparameters: specify them, estimate

them, or use a ‘flat’ prior. Each of these strategies has its own associated problems. In this paper, using

an empirical Bayes approach, we show how the hyperparameters can be estimated in a way that is both

computationally feasible and statistically valid.

We prove that the entanglement created in the low-energy scattering

of two particles in two dimensions is given by a universal

coefficient that is independent of the interaction potential. This is

strikingly different from the three dimensional case, where it is

proportional to the total scattering cross section. Before the collision

the state is a product of two normalized Gaussians. We take

the purity as the measure of the entanglement after the scattering.

We give a rigorous computation, with error bound, of the leading

order of the purity at low-energy. For a large class of potentials,

that are not-necessarily spherically symmetric, we prove that the

low-energy behavior of the purity, P, is universal. It is given by

We consider the descendants of self-adjointly extended Hamiltonians

in supersymmetric quantum mechanics on a half-line,

on an interval, and on a punctured line or interval. While there

is a 4-parameter family of self-adjointly extended Hamiltonians

on a punctured line, only a 3-parameter sub-family has supersymmetric

descendants that are themselves self-adjoint. We also

address the self-adjointness of an operator related to the supercharge,

and point out that only a sub-class of its most general selfadjoint

extensions is physical. Besides a general characterization of

self-adjoint extensions and their supersymmetric descendants, we

explicitly consider concrete examples, including a particle in a box

with general boundary conditions, with and without an additional

point interaction. We also discuss bulk-boundary resonances and

their manifestation in the supersymmetric descendant

The tunnelling mechanism is widely used to explain Hawking radiation.

However, in many cases the analysis used to obtain the

Hawking temperature only involves comparing the emission probability

for an outgoing particle with the Boltzmann factor. Banerjee

and Majhi improved this approach by explicitly finding a black

body spectrum associated with black holes. Their result, obtained

using a reformulation of the tunnelling mechanism, is in contrast

to that of Parikh and Wilczek, who found an emission probability

that is compatible with a non-strictly thermal spectrum. Using the

recently identified effective state for a black hole, we solve this contradiction

via a slight modification of the analysis by Banerjee and

Majhi. The final result is a non-strictly black body spectrum from

the tunnelling mechanism. We also show that for an effective temperature,

we can express the corresponding effective metric using

Hawking’s periodicity arguments. Potential important implications

for the black hole information puzzle are discussed.

Energy levels, transition probabilities, oscillator strengths, line strengths, and lifetimes have been

calculated for transitions in B-like Fe and Ga ions. The configurations 2s22p, 2s2p2, 2p3, 2s2p3ℓ, and 2p23ℓ

were used in the calculations and 125 fine-structure levels were obtained. The fully relativistic GRASP code

has been adopted, and results are reported for all electric dipole, electric quadrupole, magnetic dipole, and

magnetic quadrupole transitions among the lowest 125 levels of Fe XXII and Ga XXVII, belonging to the

n ≤ 3 configurations. Comparisons are made with earlier available theoretical results

We consider modeling spatio-temporally indexed relational data, motivated by analysis

of voting data for the United States House of Representatives over two decades. The

data are characterized by incomplete binary matrices, representing votes of legislators on

legislation over time. The spatial covariates correspond to the location of a legislator’s

district, and time corresponds to the year of a vote. We seek to infer latent features

associated with legislators and legislation, incorporating spatio-temporal structure. A

model of such data must impose a flexible representation of the space–time structure,

since the apportionment of House seats and the total number of legislators change over

time. There are 435 congressional districts, with one legislator at a time for each district;

however, the total number of legislators typically changes from year to year, for example

due to deaths. A matrix kernel stick-breaking process (MKSBP) is proposed, with the model

employed within a probit-regression construction. Theoretical properties of the model are

discussed and posterior inference is developed using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods.

Advantages over benchmark models are shown in terms of vote prediction and treatment

of missing data. Marked improvements in results are observed based on leveraging spatial

(geographical) information.
